Skid Plates and Rock Sliders: Protecting Your Undercarriage

A lift doesn't protect the parts underneath it. Here's how skid plates and rock sliders save your oil pan, transfer case, and rockers on the trail.

Skid Plates and Rock Sliders: Protecting Your Undercarriage
A lift gets you higher off the ground, but it doesn't make the stuff underneath invincible. The oil pan, transfer case, differential covers, and rocker panels are the parts that take the hits on a trail — and the parts that'll strand you when they're breached. That's what skid plates and rock sliders are for.
Skid Plates
A skid plate is a steel or aluminum shield bolted between the trail and your vulnerable components. The factory may give you a thin sheet-metal plate — aftermarket ones are built to actually be slid across rock.
What to protect:
- Engine/transmission oil pan — A punctured oil pan ends the trip and the engine.
- Transfer case and transmission — Low-hanging and expensive.
- Front differential and steering linkage — Especially on IFS trucks where the diff hangs low.
- Fuel tank — Often overlooked and catastrophically bad to puncture.
Steel vs aluminum:
- Steel — Heavier, cheaper, slides over rock better, bends instead of cracking. The standard for hard use.
- Aluminum — Lighter, won't rust, more expensive, and can crack on hard hits. Better for weight-conscious overland builds.
Rock Sliders
Rock sliders are tube-and-plate rails bolted along the rocker panels. They serve three jobs:
- Protect the rockers when you come down on an obstacle side-first.
- Provide a pivot point for sliding over rocks without using the body as the skid.
- Act as a step for getting in and out.
Bolt-on sliders are fine for light use; welded or frame-tied sliders are what you want if you actually wheel it. The rocker panel is structural — protecting it protects the whole body.
The Order of Buys
- Skid plate the oil pan first — it's the cheapest protection for the most expensive failure.
- Add a transfer-case skid.
- Rock sliders when you start hitting trails tight enough to drag the body.
- Differential and steering skids for serious rock work.
A skid plate is insurance you only appreciate the one time it saves the trip. Don't skip it.
