Lockers and Limited-Slips: Traction Off the Pavement
The single most capable off-road upgrade you can make isn't a tire or a lift — it's traction. A locker or limited-slip in your differential is the difference between crawling up a slick rock shelf and sitting at the bottom with two wheels spinning.
The Open Differential (Stock)
Almost every truck leaves the factory with an open diff. Open diffs send torque to the wheel with the least resistance — which off-road means the wheel in the air gets all the power while the planted wheel does nothing. Great for street longevity, useless on a trail.
Limited-Slip (LSD)
A limited-slip diff senses when one wheel is spinning faster than the other and clutches the two axles together, sending some torque to the planted wheel. It's automatic, smooth, and street-friendly.
Best for:
- Street-driven trucks that see occasional dirt
- Snow and ice performance
- Owners who want better traction without thinking about it
Lockers
A locker physically locks the two axle shafts together — both wheels turn at the same speed, no matter what. Maximum traction, but it affects on-road manners.
- Automatic lockers (Lunchbox/Lock-Right) — Replace the spider gears inside the stock carrier. Cheap, easy install, but can clunk and chirp on the street.
- Selectable lockers (ARB Air Locker, cable/electric) — Open on the street, locked when you flip a switch. The best of both worlds, at a price.
- Full-case lockers (Detroit, spool) — Replace the entire carrier. For dedicated trail rigs.
Which Do You Need?
- Daily that sees snow and dirt roads? Limited-slip.
- Weekend wheeler that's still a daily? Selectable locker — open on the road, locked on the trail.
- Dedicated trail rig? Automatic or full-case locker in the rear, selectable up front.
The surprise: a locked rear axle alone transforms most trucks. You don't need to do both ends to get most of the capability.
